Dear Future Baby

Dear Readers, this is in response to all of the parenting articles I have read lately. If they confuse you as much as they do me, you probably understand where I am coming from on this.

To the little being inside me:

It has come to my attention recently that no matter what I do, I am probably doing something wrong. Let’s face it you are baby #3, so all of those dreams of playing classical music while pregnant in hopes that you are going to be some sort of prodigy child are long gone. Besides, your sister listened to a lot of Queen and heavy metal while growing in my tummy, and she is a genius. Your big brother is the same way too. I am pretty sure about as soothing as we are going to get here is me playing an Apocalyptica ballad now and then. You will just have to learn to live with it. It probably won’t get much better after you are born.

Also, I am sorry that you will probably never have a gender neutral doll house. Honestly, if I am going to invest in a doll house, it is going to be fancy as heck, come in some sort of kit that will take me 5 years to finish, and well, if you are as active as the other two, it probably won’t be finished until you have grandchildren anyways. It is not that I want to make you all girly if you are a girl or manly if you are a boy, because your sister dresses up as General Grievous and plays with action figures and your brother loves his Cabbage Patch Kids. It is that I am just sick of having the whole issue of gender neutrality in my face. I want you kids to be kids. If you are a girl who wants Barbies, then you shall have Barbies. If you are a boy who wants to play nothing but Iron Man all day long, so be it. Most likely this will put you into therapy somehow. Sorry about that.

Also sorry about the lack of socialization you are going to have from playing with kids every day. I know homeschooling is rough. I mean we have all those playdates, field trips, and activities. I don’t know how you will manage. I guess you will just suffer along with the rest of us.

So kid, there you have it. Those are the hardcore facts that await your life outside my belly. And don’t even think about staying in there longer than you should because I will have you evicted. Yup, I know its a cruel world.

Easy Peasy Applesauce in Cake Recipe

I apologize for not writing in a while. I have been pretty busy with the new store, parties, and everything else. However, today I took some time to bake with my daughter, and we did a little experimenting with cake mixes, so I thought I would share this yummy treat with all of you who may want something sweet with  fewer calories!

Ingredients:

1 box cake mix (We used the Funfetti Cake Mix)

1 cup applesauce (We used Motts Granny Smith Applesauce)

Pre-heat at 350 degrees. Add your cake mix to your mixing bowl. Add applesauce. Mix as directed by box and bake as directed on box in a greased pan. The cake will be a bit dense, but oh my goodness, is it moist! Sissy and I thought it was absolutely fabulous! Enjoy!

Easy and delicious!

Five years…so now what?

Well I have almost reached a big milestone with my business. I have almost hit the five-year mark with Bear Haven Boutique.  I can’t believe that it has been five years already nor can I believe how far I have come. I have learned so many new skills and have made so many new friends. While it has been a wild, emotional roller coaster, it has been one that has made me a stronger person and has helped my family in so many ways.

I suppose that you may have noticed a lack of posts lately if you are a regular reader. I admit that part of that has been because of illness. I haven’t been getting sick as much, but I still seem to get knocked on my bottom for longer than usual when I do. The other reason I haven’t been as active on my blog is because I am making some decisions as to where I want to go with my business. I have been making a lot of progress with my online store and am starting to branch out in new ways with my blog. It is kinda scary in a way but exciting all the same. I am also starting to put a little more into the local part of my business as well. I think I have something unique to offer the community, and I also have started using all my new-found social media skills to help with a revitalization progress in the town I reside. I also decided that it was time to make a new upgrade to the website, and that will be done in the near future as well. There really is a lot going on here! It has been a little difficult trying to manage my time well with all of it and keep to my values of putting my family first and my business and volunteer work second. I am working on it.

I am so thankful for all the support in the past five years! I can’t wait to show you all the new changes and to celebrate with you! Thank you so much for being a part of my life!

My Hot New Ride

I have been really busy this week catching up on my other social media, advertising, shipping, emails, and other fun work related things, so today my husband took me out for coffee and then took me to Walmart to pick up this, a Schwinn Delmar 26″ Ladies Cruiser Bike!

Needless to say, I was extremely excited! The last time I owned a bike was over 12 years ago and was given to me by a friend while I was in college. Some idiots on campus stole it one night, took it for a joyride and bent the frame to the point that it wasn’t usable. While, I have an awesome exercise bike, I have always wanted a regular bike to ride around with the children and enjoy on the bike trails south of where I live. Of course, in my excitement, I had my husband drop me off out in the country on the way home and rode it back to the house. Mind you, I was riding back against the wind, hadn’t been on a real bike in years, couldn’t breathe through my nose because of the cold, and had a seat that was a bit high. Also, I forgot to bring my phone with me and realized it as my husband drove away. Yeah, it probably wasn’t the best decision I made, but I rode it home and am still excited to take it out with the kids! I absolutely love this bike. It handles nicely, and it is a comfortable ride. I had taken it over the railroad tracks, and I did not feel the bumps. I didn’t want something with a lot of bells and whistles, so this bike is perfect for me!

So yeah, this is my hot new ride, and I am super excited for spring! What new adventures have you had lately?

A Geeky Girl’s Computer Update

So last week, I whined and moaned the loss of my precious desktop. However, it was discovered that the computer is not quite dead. My husband reinstalled some things, and it is working. I am typing on it right now. However, it combined all of my files into one big super file. I am not amused. So, for right now, I cannot print off any birth certificates for the Stuff a Plush, and I am slightly starting to panic over the fact that all my pictures are on this computer somewhere, but I have no idea where, which is not cool because I am going to be upgrading my website soon. So yeah…bummer.

However, I did find a cartoon from my hero Strong Bad that sums up my feelings on the matter and includes a warning for my desktop! Computer, I hope you are watching!

Compy 386???

A Geek Girl’s lament over her precious desktop

So this morning, I found out that something is seriously wrong with my desktop. It is a dead desktop. I blame Bear Haven Daddy (don’t tell him I said that.) I mean it worked just fine when I used it yesterday.

He says that he is going to take it to a repairman. Do you know how scary that is for me??!!?? This is my baby! (Ok, not really, but I love my desktop. It is old, but it is mine, and it has all my stuff on it, and we have history together and stuff!!!)

Secretly, I think it knew that I am in the process of upgrading next week. However, I wasn’t getting rid of my old friend. I was just going to use it for something different.

Until then, I am using my hubby’s old lappy. I secretly think it hates me. It is all quirky and stuff. Who needs it anyways? … Oh wait… I do… for now. (sigh).

I am going to go stare at my precious desktop for just a little while with a wistful longing. Yup, I may be a geek and love her tech stuff, but deep down, I am a sentimental sap. Don’t believe me? You should check out my attic sometime!

Crazy Winter Weather

The weather we are having on the east coast right now is kind of crazy. In January we usually are not able to walk outside without our coats. Either we would be hit with a bitter chill that made your entire spine shake, or the snow would be falling down on you and one drop would make you shiver.

There are so many mixed reviews on hoping for more sun and warm weather or snow. Which would you choose? I do like to have a little of both and that is why I do live in Maryland. Being able to get a little of everything is always a plus for me. I’m sure we will be having snow flurries in our future though. Just the other day snow was coming down and my little ones were jumping up and down with joy. However 10 minutes later, the snow stopped and nothing stuck on the ground.

How many of you love the snow? Yes, some people may think that is can complicate their travel, or their plans for the day and cause school closings. However, this is a time when you can be with your family and have fun! Don’t we all deserve to have that every now and then?

How to Make New Year’s Resolutions you will actually keep

Around this time last year, I decided that I really needed to make some changes in my life. However, I did not want to just make a list of difficult things that I knew I would regret or forget. I made a list of things I wanted to do that I knew I could. While some of the things on my list may not have worked out the way I envisioned them, I am proud to say that I continually found ways to work on each thing on my list all throughout the year. So I thought I would share how to make some New Year’s Resolutions that you will want to keep.

1. Dream big, but start small. One of the things on my list that didn’t work out for me was taking a dance class. For me, it was a time conflict as well as a childcare one. Instead, I got out my Just Dance games (I pretty much have all of them. I am a HUGE addict) and danced… a lot! My husband knows how much I love the games and that I wanted to try Zumba, but all the classes conflict with my schedule. So he got me Zumba for the Wii. The other part about all of this is nice is that I am not afraid to screw up because no one else is looking at me!

2. Create realistic goals. If you want to lose weight, that is great. However, giving yourself a goal of losing a bunch of weight in a short amount of time is only setting yourself up for failure. Not only that, the temptation to use unsafe diet practices is greater with an unrealistic goal, and you may run into health problems or gain the weight back. Make sure that what you want is realistic and give it proper time.

3. Research your resolutions and have a strategy. If you want to eliminate debt, research your options and plan it out. There are a lot of great programs and strategies to do it, and if you don’t know what you are doing, you are most likely to get frustrated and give up.

4. Don’t make ‘Bandwagon’ resolutions. What I mean by this is don’t say you are going to do something because everyone else is doing it or you are being guilted into it by all the commercials on TV right now. Make resolutions for yourself.

5. Have accountability. For my accountability, I published my list for the whole world to see. I also wrote a few posts related to it throughout the year mostly so I could check in with my progress. For example, if you want to start a fitness plan, find a buddy who can workout with you.

6. Jump back on the horse. We are all human and imperfect. Sometimes we make mistakes. However, we need to brush away the guilt and get back to our goal. Just keep going.

7. Believe in yourself. If you don’t believe you can do something, well you can’t. Ultimately, if you want it bad enough, you must have the confidence to make it happen.

I hope you find my advice useful. Honestly, I did not make any resolutions this year. I am just going to keep working on my list from last year. It is all a good work in progress! What do you want to tackle in your life this year?

If you Give A Mom a Muffin…

One of my friends posted this on Facebook earlier today, and it was too funny (and slightly true) to not share it with all of you! Happy New Year!

“If you give a mom a muffin, she’ll want a cup of coffee to go with it. She’ll pour herself some. Her three-year-old will spill the coffee. She’ll wipe it up. Wiping the floor, she will find dirty socks. She’ll remember she has to do laundry. When she puts the laundry in the washer, she’ll trip over boots and bump into the freezer. Bumping into… the freezer… will remind her… she has to plan supper. She will get out a pound of hamburger. She’ll look for her cookbook. (101 Things To Make With A Pound Of Hamburger.) The cookbook is sitting under a pile of mail. She will see the phone bill, which is due tomorrow. She will look for her checkbook. The checkbook is in her purse that is being dumped out by her two-year-old. She’ll smell something funny. She’ll change the two-year-old. While she is changing the two-year-old the phone will ring. Her five-year-old will answer and hang up. She’ll remember that she wants to phone a friend to come for coffee. Thinking of coffee will remind her that she was going to have a cup. She will pour herself some. And chances are, if she has a cup of coffee, her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.”

Tips for making life easier

I have no idea where this originated, but these are some great ideas, so I had to share them with all of you!

1. Hull strawberries easily using a straw.

2. Rubbing a walnut over scratches in your furniture
will disguise dings and scrapes.

3. Remove crayon masterpieces from your TV or
computer screen with WD40.

4. Stop cut apples browning in your child’s lunch box
by securing with a rubber band.

5. Overhaul your linen cupboard, store bed linen sets
inside one of their own pillowcases and there will
be no more hunting through piles for a match.

6. Pump up the volume by placing your iPhone & iPod
in a bowl.  The concave shape amplifies the music.

7. Re-use a wet-wipes container to store plastic bags.

8. Attach a Velcro strip to the wall to store soft toys.

9. Find tiny lost items like earrings by putting a
stocking over the vacuum hose.

10. Make an instant cupcake carrier by cutting
crosses into a box lid.

11. For those who can’t stand the scrunching and
bunching: how to perfectly fold a fitted sheet.

12. Forever losing your bathroom essentials?  Use
magnetic strips to store bobby pins, tweezers
and clippers, behind a vanity door

13. Store shoes inside shower caps to stop dirty
soles rubbing on your clothes.  And you can
find them in just about every hotel.

14. A muffin pan becomes a craft caddy.  Magnets
hold the plastic cups down to make them
tip-resistant.

15. Bread tags make the perfect cord labels.

16. Bake cupcakes directly in ice-cream cones, so
much more fun and easier for kids to eat.

17. Microwave your own popcorn in a plain brown paper
bag.  Much healthier and cheaper than the packet
stuff.

18. Install a tension rod to hang your spray bottles.

19. Turn your muffin pan upside down, bake cookie-dough
over the top and voila, you have cookie bowls for fruit
or ice-cream.

20. Freeze Aloe Vera in ice-cube trays for soothing
sunburn relief.

21. Create a window-box veggie patch using guttering.

22. Use egg cartons to separate and store your
Christmas decorations.

23. Add this item to your beach bag.  Baby powder
gets sand off your skin easily, who knew?!
