Recently, we got the opportunity to review The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set based on the books by Gertrude Chandler Warner and published by Albert Whitman & company. My big kids loved The Boxcar Children series when they were younger. This early reader version gives children not quite ready for chapter books the opportunity to fall in love with The Boxcar Children too!

The Boxcar Children Early Reader is an excellent starter set of the first four stories from the iconic Boxcar Children series. The series is geared toward ages 5-7, grades K-2 and provide a natural bridge from picture books to chapter books.

About Time to Read and The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set

The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set is part of the Time To Read program, which is geared towards children ages 5-7, grades K-2. It is part of their level 2 set. Their level 2 set is designed to help early readers transition from picture books to chapter books. The set includes the following books:

  • The Boxcar Children
  • Surprise Island
  • The Yellow House Mystery
  • Mystery Ranch

These books use artwork from the animated film The Boxcar Children released in 2014. The books bring a shortened version of the original series to life for young readers to encourage confident readers!

Our Review of The Boxcar Children Early Reader Set

Crankles is still in the early stages of reading. She cannot read these on her own yet. However, she loved using these books in our nightly reading routine. She knows that her big brother and sister loved this series, so she couldn’t wait to find out why.

While she can’t read them on her own, we enjoyed reading the series together. Also, this gives Crankles the incentive to want to get to the point of reading on her own. The letters are big enough for budding readers. While they aren’t chapter books, it is easy to find a place to stop in the event Crankles wanted to talk about the book.

Also, we loved the illustrations in the book. I loved that they used the artwork for the movie. I think it really helped keep Crankles interested in the series.

Since the books are shortened versions of the actual series, I wanted to note that they keep true to the stories in the series. This is important to me because we have read similar types of books that don’t.

Even though Crankles is a bit too young for these books in terms of reading on her own, I feel she will enjoy reading them on her own as soon as she is able. Plus, they are well-made, so they will last her a while too!
