During our mornings, the kids and I have been reading Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion’s Roar (Book 6) from WorthyKids Books. Recently, I got the opportunity to review part of this series. Since my youngest has been really into Bible stories, I thought this would be fun reading for us.
About the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls Series
The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls is a 7-book series where the main characters, Peter, Mary, and their dog Hank travel back to Biblical times. They are catapulted back in time through mysterious items found at their Great-Uncle Solomon’s house. Racing against the clock, they must solve the clue and return home before being trapped in Biblical times.
For this review, we read Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd’s Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion’s Roar (Book 6). In Book 5, the time travelers end up in Bethlehem, where they befriend a young David. Peter and Mary uncover a treacherous plot. Plus they are there as David prepares to face to Goliath. In Book 6, the trio visit Babylon where they meet Shadrach and Daniel. They are there at the time of the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den.
These books are chapter books and are great for kids ages 6-9. Each of these books retells Bible stories in a fun way. At the end of each book, the author, M.J. Thomas, adds notes as to where to find the stories in the Bible.
What We Liked About the Books
We enjoyed reading this series so far, and my youngest can’t wait for the next one. The books are mainly for ages 6-9. However, the do make for good read aloud books for family time or homeschool reading time. Even my 13-year old enjoyed the series.
The plot lines are entertaining, and the kids become really invested in the story. Since we are reading the story to my youngest, she appreciates the illustrations throughout the novels.
For me, I liked the books but partly because it reminded me of two cartoon series from when I was a kid. I remember enjoying Bible stories while watching those cartoons. It really brought the stories to life. My kids feel the same way as I did while reading this series, so that is fun for me to see!
