Before we get started, let’s talk about prepping for field trips…

Okay, so I know that some of this prep work is obvious. However, with kids and mom brain, I often feel I run with about 32 tabs open at all times. If you have a chance, do things the night before you leave…after the kids are in bed. I am the royal of all list-making to ensure I have everything we need.

First, I make sure I have cash on hand. As someone who rarely carries cash, I have to remind myself that some places still work better with cash on hand…whether it’s a vendor or a parking garage. Also, I install any apps that may make life easier for the trip. For example, I use the Pittsburgh parking app to make sure that I am always paid up on the meter whenever we visit the city. It just makes life easier to set everything up beforehand.

Also, double-check that there are no closings ahead of time. I do this via their social media usually because sometimes the websites are not always clear. Every once in a while, some places close unexpectedly for construction or a private event. While we are on this subject, make sure you don’t need reservations. Sometimes when a place has a special exhibit, you need tickets or reservations ahead of time!

Finally, make sure you bring snacks, maybe even a packed lunch, as food does tend to cost more at a museum. I like to save on my travel budget whenever possible.
