While we are all asked to practice social distancing from others, now is the perfect time to think about virtual parties. Anniversaries, family reunions, dinner parties, graduation parties, and even birthday parties don’t have to be canceled or postponed until you can see each other in person! I have put together a party guide that is perfect for any kind of virtual party! Here is the ultimate virtual party guide.
The Invite
The first thing you will need for your party is the invitations! With the mail and package companies being so busy these days, the last thing you want is to lose someone’s invitation in the mail. Instead, send out virtual invitations over email or text! These can be made very easily on websites such as Canva, Shutterfly, and other invitation sites. Etsy also has some digital download options too.
Set Up a Way to Communicate
You need a way to talk to your party guests! This is a crucial step and one that is best to start with before you send out those invites if you can! There are a bunch of great video and voice chat apps that can make it easy for large groups to get together!
Here are some great options:
- FaceTime (or Hangouts if you have an Android device)
- Duo
- Zoom
- Skype
Decide on a Theme
Setting a theme for your party can make the whole experience so much better! Just because you can’t see each other in person doesn’t mean you can’t get dressed up for the event! You can still have a black-tie dinner or a dress-up party over video chat! Decide on your theme and encourage your guests to dress up for the event!
Determine the Food
What’s a party without food, right? Well, you don’t have to forego food to have a great party! You can set up food at your event in several different ways. The first option would be to do a show and tell style meal. Have each person make a dish for themselves and then share it with everyone! You could also make a set menu and have the host send out recipes for everyone to make ahead of time. You could even let each person choose a course and then share recipes that way too.
Play Party Games
Party games are a great way to entertain your party guests. You can still play party games even if you’re stuck at home! Table Topics or conversation starters are a great way to keep the conversation going with your guests; you could also play Pictionary, charades, or scattergories without having everyone there! Get creative and see what you can do with your party guests to have some fun!
Hopefully, these tips will help you put together a great party, even if you can’t all be there in person. These tips can work well for any party, and should scale to as many or as few people as you want to invite!

I like the different themes. Great information.
These sound like great ideas! I definitely think virtual get togethers are important to do.
Really helpful for times like these, take a little getting used to but it’s all good.
This is so handy. Wanted to do this for my son’s upcoming birthday and do a zoom party
Such marvelous ideas! Pinned!
I love these virtual party ideas! They are very creative and fun!
These are great ideas. With all this mess we all have been dealing with last 7 months or so this is perfect!
These are super great ideas thank you for sharing this one.
These are good ideas!!! And this is the first I’ve heard much of Duo or WhatsApp. I’ve heard of Zoom, but haven’t tried it yet. I notice on our local FB groups, some people are going back to having in-person parties, and not heeding executive orders. Kids may even appreciate the novelty of something different!
