I have mentioned here and on Instagram about my struggles with anxiety. When I was given the opportunity to review the book The Anxiety Reset, which offers individualized solutions for conquering anxiety by mental health expert Dr. Gregory Jantz, I jumped at the chance to read it! Currently, I am going to therapy to help deal with my anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, but I also want other items that will help in my personal tool kit as well. So today I want to share why someone with anxiety would want this book in their tool kit. Also, even if you don’t have anxiety, you might want to read this to help someone you love who does!
About the Book The Anxiety Reset
The Anxiety Reset deals with coping skills for those dealing with Anxiety, stress, OCD, panic attacks, and more. It does have a religious slant to it. However, it does not come from the stand point that you can just pray your mental illness away. I say this because I have been told this more than once from religious people. This book validates mental illness as very real. It gives explanations as to how we end up with anxiety and mental illnesses. However, it also provides information and tools to help you manage your anxiety better.
Does it take the place of medication or therapy? No. There is no one thing that will fix everything. Many of us need a tool kit of a sorts to help us manage our anxiety. This book gives good suggestions on how to manage it and can complement the other things you are doing to manage mental illness.
Why you should read this book even if you don’t have Anxiety
Even if you don’t have anxiety, OCD, or panic attacks, this is a good read to help you understand those who do. I get so frustrated with toxic positivity by people who don’t understand mental illness. What is toxic positivity? It is, for example, when you tell someone to just think positive. Good vibes only…and all that crap. Because let’s just call it what it is…crap. When a family member or friend reaches out to you for support and they hear this, what they are really hearing is that you aren’t their support system.
I don’t say this as a put down. I say this as a way to explain. It gets frustrating to not feel validated for what you are going through. Toxic positivity does not give validation to ones feelings.
