One of the things my big kids loved about past Christmases was some of the over the top things I did with their Elf “Dobby.” As I mentioned in a previous post, he went joyriding and may have destroyed the kitchen a time or two. However, while the over the top antics get a lot of attention on social media, you do not have to be that “inventive” to have fun with Elfing for the holidays.

Our elf has been pretty docile since his arrival on December 1 and for good reason. I ended up in the ER Saturday night with seizure like activity. For those who don’t know, I have some neurological issues that we are still sorting. While I admit that I am a little depressed right now about having to take it easy, especially during the holidays, I am adapting. I also want to make some holiday magic for Miss Crankles, so I present to you some lazy Elf ideas for the too tired or, in my case, chronically ill parent.

1. Elf in a Tree

My 12 year-old did this one for me while I was at the hospital. Yes, I sent a text message saying, “MOVE THE ELF!!!” I had these aspirations of having at least three trees. Right now, we are at one, a pretty dress form one that Crankles named “Ellie.” Crankles awoke Sunday morning to see Grainger in the head of the tree!

Crankles likes to get pictures with her Elf every day!

2. Elf Playing Video Games

This one is super simple. You can do it with just the elf or set out a few toys to make it look like a gaming party. All you need is a game controller or two. Extra points if you make sure to have your tv switched to gaming console mode before bed.

3. Setting a Scene

Okay, I admit that when I am feeling a bit better, I fully intend on doing something with our large collection of Geo Trax. However, Crankles loves her “Spirit” horses and barn. So I took a few minutes to make it look like they were all going for a ride.

The elf and friends are riding around the barnyard.

4. Elf in a Stocking

This one was the one we did this morning, and for as simple as it was, it was a big hit. Miss Crankles scolded Grainger though for climbing in her stocking, telling him he was a cheeky elf. Originally, I was going to do this one and put the kids’ Gingerbread House with it, but I guess I will be saving the Gingerbread House for a different day.

While these are pretty tame, they still require a bit of thought. However, if you need ideas with little to no prep work, these are definitely ones to try. I know that social media sometimes makes us want to up the ante. However, if doing the Elf thing stresses you out, then it really isn’t fun. Creating Christmas Magic and making holiday traditions should not be a chore. This time of year is super stressful, and to be honest, if we are stressed, then chances are that our kids will be too. For me, the Elf thing has always been about having fun and creating a bit of magical whimsy for my kids. While I have a few over the top ideas for this year, I may not be able to execute them considering my current situation. However, I am having fun doing what I can. Don’t put pressure on yourself…either with this or anything else this season. If there is anything I have learned recently, it is that we really need to take care of ourselves and that what our kids really want is for us to be present.

    1. I have been saving ideas for years. I am completely starting the whole elf thing over with having a huge age gap between kids

    1. The video game one is usually done once a year. I also suggest the Elf at the computer or tablet with the Santa Tracker website up

  1. Our elf arrived on St. Nicholas day to give this tired mama a few less days of annoyance! It’s all worth it when I see the excitement and smiles on my kids faces each morning. Priceless!

  2. These are great ideas! I have needed to come up with something quick when I didn’t feel good or just plain forgot the night before.
