This easy to make Reindeer Food recipe was first concocted in my kitchen in 2013. We make this every year to add just a little extra Christmas magic. If you have followed me for a while, you know how I am big on Christmas magic, which is why my elf antics have gone a little over the top some years!
This recipe is super easy, like most everything I make. This reindeer food recipe also includes things you probably already have in your kitchen. Also, this can be made glitter-free. I know not all of us want glittery sidewalks or wildlife creatures that poop glitter!
Reindeer Food Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 C Oats
- Red and Green Decorating Sugar or glitter (note: decorating sugar is not as messy and will not leave your sidewalks looking like a bomb went off…just sayin’)
Directions:
Pour the oats (used Quaker Oats for this batch) into a bowl. Add the red and green sugar into the bowl until you can see some of the sparkles. That’s it. Let the kids sprinkle it outside Christmas Eve!
Final Thoughts
I hope you and your kids enjoy making this fun, easy DIY reindeer food recipe. When I first did this with my big kids when they were little, I never thought it would become part of our holiday traditions.
While I know not everyone is keen on things like Elf on the Shelf, adding some little holiday traditions really do make the holiday season more magical. It is what added that extra spark for my kids when my husband would be out in the field on Christmas day, instead of home with us.

I love this! I’ll have to tuck this away for next year.
This would be great for the upcoming holidays!
I need to remember to make this soon!
This is a cute idea, and I’m thinking maybe the squirrels or birds would end up eating it, doubt it would go to waste if the reindeer leave any!
This was one of the reasons I did this the way I did. While you can use glitter, the absence of it makes it more friendly to the other wildlife.
