The importance of finding what’s right for you

In the 12 plus years of homeschooling, I have met a lot of frustrated parents. In fact, I have had my seasons of being one of them. I get caught up in wanting to make sure they get enough socialization. I have homeschooled through health issues and family crises. Finding the right homeschool solutions that work whether we are on-go or even in crisis mode has been key to our homeschool journey. Not only that, it builds confidence as a homeschool parent because let’s face it, sometimes we all feel we aren’t doing enough.

Homeschool dreams vs. reality

Whether you are a parent of one or more than one homeschooled child, you may feel like there just isn’t enough you to go around or enough time in the day. Ideally, it would be fabulous if we could have a set schedule and all the kids were sitting there working calmly all the time. Also, in that scenario, the baby would, of course, not try to scale furniture while you assist their siblings. I don’t know about you, but my day does NOT look like this. My kids have activities and appointments that interfere with having a set schedule. My one-year old is a tiny terror, super adorable and loveable but will totally try to climb the fridge if you turn your back for 10 seconds. Then there is the fact that I am homeschooling one child that is Autistic and one that has ADHD.

In short, sometimes our homeschool day looks like a giant dumpster fire, and that is when we are home. If we have any hope of getting to all the places we need to be, we need flexible homeschool solutions.

How to find Homeschool solutions that work for families on the go

If your day sometimes resembles my description above, then you are probably asking how to make it all work. How do you find solutions to work with your child’s individual needs? How do you find solutions that work for you and don’t cause you to burn out?

I like finding programs that are self-guided rather than have me do all the teaching. In making sure they are portable, I look for easy-to-use textbooks and for programs that are app-based or have the ability to work offline when we don’t have internet access. It is one of the reasons I love the math program Teaching Textbooks. Some of my children use it for math. It not only works for them, but it also eases my frustration as well because while I am decent at math, I don’t know all the answers. Also, when I am chasing the little one from place to place, I sometimes can’t focus to answer questions.

Honestly, I wish more subjects had programs like Teaching Textbooks, as it is my favorite math program for busy families. It is mobile-friendly, has offline mode, contains a scratch-pad mode for working out problems, and automatically grades. It makes my kids’ lives easier because they can do their math class virtually anywhere…from a waiting room to a car to even the trampoline outside. Plus it makes my life easier because there is support for parents and students and I don’t have to grade their work.

With using Teaching Textbooks for math, I don’t have to worry about giving assignments when we are traveling or going to activities. This gives me more time to plan out assignments for subjects like literature where we have to bring a book with us. It makes for less to carry or remember to put in the backpack.
