Puppy Chow is one of those holiday treats that my family looks forward to making every year! It also makes for a fun activity for littles, too! Here is the puppy chow recipe we make in our family. Don’t worry, it isn’t as hard as it looks! This recipe was originally posted in 2011, but I decided it needs a little update!
Putting the Fun into Making Holiday Treats!
My family loves to bake and make fun treats for the holidays! We also make extras to share with neighbors and friends. However, I know for some parents, time in the kitchen with kids can be a bit stressful. So, let’s talk about that for a minute.
When cooking with kids in the kitchen, it is often best to lower your expectations. Things will go wrong. You will make a mess. However, focus on the enjoyment. Mess can be cleaned later!
Also, make sure you have extra ingredients when cooking and baking with younger children. That way, if you have a disaster, you always have backup ingredients.

Combine the peanut butter, butter, chocolate chips, and vanilla in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for one minute. Stir thoroughly. Then microwave for one more minute. Stir again. Place Chex in a large bowl. Pour the mixture over the Chex and mix thoroughly. Using a large Ziploc bag or re-sealable container, add the powdered sugar, then the covered Chex mixture. Final Thoughts
I originally shared this recipe when my older two were little. It is the same recipe as the one my mom used when we made holiday treats together.
While my mom and I don’t get the opportunity to do holiday baking anymore, I want to make sure I preserve the recipes used when I was growing up so that I can pass them down to my family to create new memories.
Baking and making holiday treats growing up is one of my favorite memories with my mom. I remember being pretty little when my mom handed me my very own cookie dough at Christmas to make my own cookies at my little kids table while she baked the rest for family. Now that she is older, I find myself missing these little things more and more. I don’t know how many more years I have with her, but I want to make them count!
I hope you and your family enjoy this puppy chow recipe. If you have made this, what is something that you add to yours that makes yours unique? As always, I love hearing from you! This does look so good! I like making treat bags at holiday time, to hand out to shut ins, and neighbors. This would be perfect for that!
