I am going to be honest. I have been avoiding this post all day, not because I am not thankful for my Letter Rs today, but because two of the big ones for today are an emotional subject.
I am thankful for my nephew Reed. My son loves seeing his cousin and is so happy that he has a boy cousin close to his age. I also think it is quite awesome how many of us in my family are adopted. It is especially amusing when someone comments how he/she can see the family resemblance in my nephew, my niece Brett, and me. All three of us are adopted!
I am thankful for my brother Ryan. He is my older stepbrother by two years. He always seems so responsible, and I have always looked up to him.
I am also extremely grateful to have known two of the most wonderful grandmothers a child could ask for. The first one had been in my life since birth. She was not my grandmother by blood or adoption. She was my grandmother since the time I came home from the hospital simply because she wanted to be. Her name was Rena, and she was simply amazing. She taught me how to do my hair, makeup, and nails. She was a kind and nurturing person who didn’t complain. She cared so much about my mother and me that she and her husband helped us so many times when we were in need. She also helped my mom keep the Santa Secret alive by going above and beyond to make a child, whose childhood was very difficult, continually believe in the magic of Christmas. She passed away when I was 17, but I still miss her every day.
The second grandmother is my Grandma Rita. Ironically, she also was not a grandmother by blood or adoption either. She came into my life as a step-grandmother. However, the word “step” never existed with her. From the first time I met her, she told me to call her “Grandma,” and I did. She treated me as if I was an equal to the other grandchildren. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I looked up to her more than she ever knew. She helped me through hard times. She was always there. She was the glue that kept the family together. She was the reason we all got together for holidays. My Grandma Rita was simply amazing. I miss her so much.
I am so thankful to have had them in my life. They were great role models and wonderful women. While I miss them terribly, I feel lucky that I got to have them in my life.
What are you thankful for today?
